ARTICULOS

A NATURAL WONDER

Cueva de las Maravillas is a magnificent underground cave, located on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic.  It is on t.he road between the townships of La Romana and San Pedro de Macorís, and is home to a wealth of well-preserved indigenous Taíno petroglyphs.

Dating back thousands of years, the pictographs are surrounded by dramatic stalagmites and stalactites. Overall, the effect is well deserving of the Spanish name Cueva de las Maravillas, which means “Cave of Wonders”.

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE ECONOMY OF DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Arduous working and living conditions are endured by sugarcane cutters to produce sugar for our consumption. They live with their families in company-provided housing settlements, called “bateyes,”

CLIMATE CHANGE

Due to its geographical position and island status, the country is highly vulnerable to meteorological phenomena such as hurricanes and tropical storms; exposing the territory to dangerous hazards and considerable economic and social hardship. As of 2017, the DR was ranked the 11th most vulnerable country in the world to climate change, with floods being the most common climate-related hazard. Heavy rainfall associated with cyclones and hurricanes contribute significantly to wet season rainfall totals. Cyclone and hurricane landfall frequencies occur, on average, every two years, but can occur as often as two per year or as little as every five to ten years. The northeastern region of the country is vulnerable to

floods and mudslides from severe storms, while arid parts of the northwest are experiencing increasing temperatures and aridity leading to more drought, reducing crop yields and negatively affect water supplies.

PIENSALO

Geography has an impact on how people live from the resources they have access to to how they move through the world.  Their history, risks and comfort are all determined by where they sit on the map.

1. It impacts the resources you have access to (and their quality)

2. It determines how you (and goods) travel

3. It influences your culture: Nature has long since been a source of inspiration for poets, writers, songwriters and artists throughout history, and the products of their creativity often become a lasting part of our culture.

4. It might put you at risk or keep you safe: Depending on where you live, you may be aware of geographic risks that a person in another country may not ever face (e.g.tsunamis in Thailand, avalanches in Switzerland, droughts in the Middle East)  The risk of natural disasters also impacts creativity and development -- like a new building technology developed in Japan to stop buildings from crumbling in earthquakes.

5. It can often determine your history : If you live in a country that has natural resources like oil, diamonds, copper, cobalt, for example, chances are other countries want those resources too.  Often this can be the difference between living in a peaceful nation and surviving a war.
